The term "Latin" basically refers to dances that have their origins mostly in Latin America and the wider Caribbean Sea region.
In recent decades, after the rise of competitive dance, it has been established that we use the term "Ballroom Latin" or more simply "Latin" for certain dances that are danced by a couple, either socially or competitively (dancesport).
For the most part, these dances are particularly characterized by the intense hip movement, the clear dance poises and the intense expression of the emotions they represent.
These Latin dances are taught and danced in International and American Style. These two styles do not include exactly the same types of dance (e.g. American style does not include Paso Doble but includes Mambo while International style includes Paso Doble and not Mambo), but their main differences are in matters of technique. Here you can read an interesting article about the similarities, differences and interactions between these two styles.
At Tiempo Loco dance school we teach and dance in International style:
- Rumba
- Cha Cha Cha
- Samba
- Jive
- Paso Doble
